Tony Brooks
Biography
Born in England, Tony Brooks served in the Royal Navy and then trained as a teacher. He taught for some years in high school, having studied French at the Institut Britannique and the Sorbonne in Paris, and was also a primary school teacher and principal. Migrating to Australia in 1971, he taught for ten years at all levels of primary school and as tutor/lecturer at Murray Park CAE. His degree is in Educational Drama and he has worked as actor, director, and stage manager at professional and amateur levels.
He also confesses to writing dozens of poems that he sometimes performs in public, and which have helped unlock the flow of words over the years.
A long term member of SA Writers Theatre and S.A. Writers’ Centre, his scripts have been performed and presented on stage, radio, and in film form both here and in the united States. He now lives in Moana with his wife, Lyn, who is an artist and designer.
His first novel, ‘First of All’ was published by Axiom Press in 1995 and re-printed in 2001. A number of his film, TV, and stage projects have been funded by ArtsSA and Film Australia. In 1994 the play, ‘Games’ received an Advertiser award as one of the best new plays of the year. In 2002 his novel, ‘Beyond the Reef’, was published by Geelong Small Press Publishing and Arwen Books. Tony is particularly interested in writing on South Australian and Australian historical and political themes.
He also wrote a set of twelve TV scripts with the title ‘Curve of the Earth’ which was a family saga covering the sixty plus years of the life of the great copper mines of the York Peninsula. Earlier he wrote another piece for stage also entitled ‘Curve of the Earth’, but with an entirely different, fictional story line. Tony has now written a trilogy of novels based on the TV scripts, which are now available to the public.
