Technical Instructions

If you are a new user please carry out the following checks to ensure that BetterThanaBook Enhanced Text© will work properly on your computer.

Step 1: Test Flash

  • The multi-media aspects of BetterThanaBook Enhanced Text© are encoded in Adobe Flash. If you do not hear a sound every time you click on the speaker icon above, click on the Flash icon to update Flash on your computer to the latest version.

Step 2: Test Java

To send large documents like novels with rich multi-media text over the Internet, it is necessary to encode them using Java.

If Java is working, you will see a pink box above with one line of text that says the Java Version and Company.

If you don't see a pink box above, Java may not be installed.

Follow these instructions to update your browser with Java.

  1. Bookmark this page so that you can easily return to the BetterThanaBook.org Library.
  2. Click here to install a free copy of Java.
  3. Select the "Offline Installation" Download and follow the prompts.
  4. Restart your browser and return to the BetterThanaBook.org website.

Step 3: Test Your Speakers

  1. Click on the speaker. If you do not hear "y" "e" "s", check that you have speakers connected and turned on.
  2. If that does not work go to your sound controls in your operating system and adjust them.
  3. For Windows XP click on START > Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices
    • In the VOLUME tab make sure that the MUTE is not ticked and that the volume is adjusted properly.
    • In the SOUNDS tab highlight a sound with a speaker next to it and click on the small arrow icon to play the sound.
    • In the AUDIO tab make sure the default device for sound playback is your sound card.
